Cartouche 833 - 8

Mon, 11 June 2018 20:48

/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=3726&private=0For your viewing pleasure is a 1929 Gruen Cartouche with the original cloth band and it's buckle! What's interesting to note is that the engraving on the buckle matches that of the dial... flower theme! The inside back cover is stamped 833 - 8! This watch is in excellent condition and it is running nicely! Enjoy!

Gruen Ristside Falcon

Fri, 08 June 2018 20:41

I have a watch that belonged to my grandfather. I am trying to find out a couple of things;

Exactly what it is....name, style...etc.
Is it worth cleaning up & servicing? (it still runs, but could use a good service)
How much should it be worth (insurance purposes)

Thanks!!

Model name : Not sure....but 'Batwing' keeps popping up in my searches.
Type : Ristside?
Period/date : 40's/50's
Gender : Mens

Case Maker : Apex
Case Material : 10K Gold Filled
Case Serial : V24166
Case Style no :

Caliber : 440
Movement Maker : Gruen
Movement Serial: 5270? Not sure...hard to read....but has 'B' marking as well.

Bracelet : Cromwell +1/20 12K gold filled (not the original, I'm sure)

Yellow Gold 14k Gilde

Here it is now.

Model name : Unknown
Type : Unknown
Period/date : circa 1935
Gender : mens

Case Maker : unknown
Case Material : 14k solid gold, German hallmark only, so the maker is mst likely German
Case Serial : 52841
Case Style no : marked GL 137 on the inside

Caliber : 485 - 15 jewels movement
Movement Maker : Gruen/Alpina (Straub)

The nearest ad I found is this one:

/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=3709&private=0

Has "Alpina GRUEN" on the dial and the German text says "white gold".

Gilde in stainless with cal 485

Thu, 26 April 2018 18:24

Another sub-brand of Alpina was apparently 'Gilde'. Like Siegerin, the brand was marketed in Germany but I see far fewer of the Gilde marked watches than the Siegerin marked ones on eBay. Speculation might suggest that the name was not used as long or was replaced by the Siegerin name. These styles are very similar.

Model name : Unknown
Type : Unknown
Period/date : circa 1935
Gender : mens

Case Maker : Krupp (of Germany)
Case Material : Stainless Steel (marked edelstahl)
Case Serial :15456
Case Style no : marked GL 117 on the inside (assuming this is a style number)

Caliber : 485 - 15 jewels movement
Movement Maker : Gruen/Alpina (Straub)
Movement Serial: na

Bracelet : modern leather strap; original unknown

Other info : Dust proof crown design is patented by Gruen. Marked 'Krupp' on the case back.

Here is the watch as it was received. Bought off of German eBay.

The V4

17''' pocket watch movement; Mon, 19 February 2018 05:58

The V2 and V3 are posted in the list. Here is the V4.

Mikey's post on the V3 clearly shows the positive set winding stem. The V4 came with both positive and negative winding bits. There is an example on eBay at this time of a V4 with the positive setting works, but not sure I want to pony up money just to post a photo. Maybe some one can help out with this in subsequent comment?

This example has the negative setting.

The whiplash regulator is a pain in the can to adjust.

The Cal 870/871

the 13L Rebberg; Sun, 11 February 2018 18:32

The caliber 871 and the 870 are the numbers for the open face/lupine (stem at 12-o'clock) or hunter/savonnette (stem at 3-o'clock) configurations.

Which one is which I'm not sure. They also came in a non-subseconds version too. There is also a variation in the setting works. Gruen and Rolex are not the only ones to use the movement either. Rumor has it that there is an outfit that will buy non-Rolex versions of this watch, mark the wheels with "Rolex" and then case and sell them as such.

Borel has the mainsprings listed with 1.60 x .14 x 340 11 and CousinsUK has them in 1.60 x .15 x 320 12. Both are white alloy.
Gruen (1947 Horological Manual) has them as 1.65 x .15 x 320.

The caliber 885

Font caliber; Sun, 11 February 2018 17:12

The 885 is another common one out of the caliber stable. I've one on the bench and thought I should take some images. Afire has this post on his very fine watch, which I think is the only other one that clearly IDs what the movement is. An ebauche finished by/for Gruen from FHF. However, Afire state 324, Ranfft indicates the cal 1146 by FHF. There is a clear stamping with the FHF mark.

For those working on restoring the 885 there is this post on issues with the staffs
Cousins has the mainsprings as 1.45 x 0.11 x 280 x 9 (Part #GR3981) and Borel has these as 1.40-.10-320 9 (Part # MS-511M). Both are in white alloy.
Gruen (1947 Horological Manual) listed the size as 1.45 x .11 x .280 but this is for a blued steel.
