Strap 42

Wed, 04 June 2014 08:50

This cushion case arrived last week for which I had put in a very low bid and got it. It has the dial design and movement (Cal. 707) of a "Strap 41/42", but the case is not matching. That has the shape of a "Strap 17" or "24" in what I thought to be white gold filled. But the bezel and centre case are done in silver, which I have not been able to find in any of the ID guides as material for this case shape.

However it turned out to be a bit of a Franken watch unfortunately as the original case back is missing. The case back is in WGF and not Gruen Sad I'm pretty sure the rest is original though.

Anyway, after a partial refund and shipping it back being more expensive than what I paid for it I decided to keep it. At the end the strap only was already worth the money Twisted Evil.

So, can anybody ID this model assuming it has the original silver casing? I have found these cases in solid gold, gold filled and nickel, but not in silver.

p.s. if anybody has a scrap case for this... Smile

Suttle differences in Precision Automatic

Mon, 19 May 2014 20:50

So the 25 jewel Precision automatic arrived in the mail today. I was satisfied, but I did notice a very minor difference on the face of the one I bought and my Dad's version. See if you can find the difference at different lengths. When I bought the watch from e bay I did not notice it until I received it in the mail.

Below are a series of photos, the one with the goldtone band is my Dads watch, the other is the one I just got in the mail. Once you find the difference tell me if it was common for Gruen to do this. Or what it might reveal about the place that the watch was manufactured.

Guild - Import 224

Wed, 30 April 2014 22:03

Model name : Import 224
Type : Precision
Period/date : c. 1928
Gender : Mens *

Case Maker : Gruen-Weber Case Co. Geneve, Switzerland
Case Material : Guildite
Case Serial : 202080
Case Style no : none

Caliber : 313, 17j
Movement Maker : Gruen Guild
Movement Serial: 697095

Bracelet : Non-original Kiefer expansion bracelet...about 2 decades later but looks pretty good with the watch.

Other info : * I believe this was meant as a mens watch based on the style, but it's only slightly larger than this ladies 313, 15j of mine.

The dial has enamel numerals and outer track that cleaned up well. The "Gruen Precision" is NOT! enamel and the slightest touch removed a portion of the lettering. This could be the first dial I send off to have work done Sad .
