I'm not sure if any forum allows this, but it's a quite common web page thing and that's frames. Specifically to use them as galleries. Would be nice to build an album off-site and pop in the frame of it with clickable thumbnails. It would allow the images to be larger.

This is a gallery for example
http://imgur.com/a/dLGz2/embed

And to embed it you use this code that I'll put in the "code" indicators on the formatting tools line of this topic editor:

<iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="http://imgur.com/a/dLGz2/embed"></iframe>

It says next to the text box that I am typing the message into that HTML code is off as a forum option but am not sure if this is considered HTML code.

Mike, The software has HTML code turned off by default. Reasons: "In most cases allowing users to enter HTML inside their message is impractical for security and stylistic reasons".

What we can do is bring up our test forum and play around with this option. If this works, weigh the risks of enabling it in production.

Found that you can enable this feature on a by-forum basis. What do you think?

I like it! I started looking for better online picture hosting than the big names and found two that came up as particularly great. The cool thing about this one that I thought would work will here is that if you look in the upper right corner at the gear (options), you can see or download the full resolution picture. It allows for large images that way. The other part that's good with these guys in particular is the ease of uploading. For some forums it's more difficult than here. In fact, this forum is one of the only ones I know that you can easily do a BULK upload. I suggest perhaps folks look at the backend and creatin one of the to see what you think there. An account is free if you want one. You don't have to have an account at all to make one. htp://www.imgur.com You can change layouts too. It's just a thought.... could be plenty of downsides you could come up with. Other gallery generator options would be available too using the same iframe statement As I preview this message I'm writing, I don't see these iframes I type in and all of my text runs together into one big block as if the blank lines have all been removed. Dunno if that's a side effect or normal. Anyways, I haven't seen anything like it done with a forum so it's kind of an unusual request I suppose. Not trying to kick up a dust cloud. [edit] removed one gallery that was not imagur.com based but was good to test

Another test (sorry to litter the thread) Changing the layout of the gallery only seems to change it on the site, which isn't so bad. If you visit the site you're able to download all of the gallery's images at once in a zip file. You can mess with the "frame" statement though to make it bigger You could debate that it's better for images to all be stored here on the forum. One thing about off-forum is that the features available to the viewer and accessibility to the images could improve. In this case, users can download the images to their computer at full resolution, or visit the site and get them all with a single click. And I guess that's a downside to HTML that I don't know about that you've researched. Thanks for researching this stuff and trying it out so quickly. [edit] -- Changed the frame size down from 1000 pixels in height to 700 to see if the shock value is a little less Smile

Yikes! You probably have to use the "p" and "br" tags to break your lines and keep them from running together plus add spacing. Downside of drafting messages with HTML coding on. My guess is HTML takes presidence over the WYSIWYG editor. Maybe that's why the forum uses a custom BBcode.

I do like the gallery views. I'm not sure if this will work in our forum environment but I will play around.

I appreciate the help and flexibility to do the tests. It's not a feature seen much I suppose. I didn't except, nor don't, changes to put this kind of thing in. Was more for my education. But now that it's been experienced as it were, maybe there's an opportunity to have a forum for galleries?? Could be a good way to show off a lot of watches more easily? Thinking out loud, don't see a driving need, but did just happen to think that it could be an interesting differentiator from other forum sites having a gallery oriented and hosted forum. I'll continue to experiment with the Imagur.com site on my own at the GW site for the cases that I want to distribute groups of photos as it does make it handy to do zipped downloads. Thanks again for the sandbox.

I did some digging and found we can make custom tags and incorporate them into the BBcode. We are already running this plug-in so it shouldn't be hard to incorporate the iframe tag. I'm going to turn off HTML coding. I will put iframe into BBcode on our test forum and we'll try it out, go from there.

Again Gary, it's not a pressing thing that I'm complaining about or think of as a shortcoming. It's a "stretch goal"? Something to mess with for fun or present certain things in an interesting manner. I like these sorts of interactive picture presentations which is why I tend to use them a lot on GR and visitors seems to enjoy them too. The one I put up last Sept has 8,700 hits. Not a problem Mike. There is a plug-in for this forum that can present a similar gallery view. Lightbox

I been meaning to experiment with this one thinking I could put a gallery banner on the main page right below the header. Sure would give the forum a face-lift of sorts.
