I have ads for both display boxes you are showing, when I run across them I will post. If I remember correctly, the second one is quite a bit older than the first.
On a side note....have you ever wondered who supplied....these? (Nameplates)

Making the insert from the velvet back of a picture frame is doable. But a shiny label with gold  .
Yes, I own the same box w an original insert so I looked into it.
Unfortunately, L.F. Grammes & Son's (maker of the nameplates) disappeared about 1970, so you might have a hard time getting a hold of them.
The company began in 1876. Was founded by Louis F. Grammes, Allentown, PA. They made an unbelievable amount of metal products, around 12,000 different ones in 1927.

If you are interested, I can show you some other things they made for Gruen, when I get home to take photos, lmk:)

Yes, metal, but some of the "Met-a-label" ("metal print craft") were paperbacked to help them glue on. I've only inspected mine that have fallen off naturally, though, and there seems to be different thickness to the "foil" and purposes of the tiny tags, "pricesticker" (whatever you'd like to call them). Some fold, some stay on top...
You can not overestimate the amount of different products Grammes produced, from so small to big machines that made boxes, etc. They have patents for metal box making processes and techniques. I've looked at over 30 of their patents for matches for my Gruen stuff, none exact so far.
Cool I'll share more.
Yeah, I would *love* to see that patent.....
I'll get the date for this card too, I was always curious what watch it may be...

Hi Jenneke,
I saw this box in an ad that seemingly was a close match of a box of mine. It's quite similar to yours here but there are differences like the gold bead trim. I do not know if it's enough to convince you that this box could possibly be for a men's watch but thought I'd share, whadyathink?
The date on it is San Fran Examiner, December 13, 1931.

No debate on that one. Baguette text inside the lid! And Guild.
Texture different from the brown service boxes. And those lines... nice.
