Could this be a box that Gruen used when sending a watch back? After fitting a watch strap on the fixed lugs?

Yes, Gruen seems to send back a serviced calibre 704. But there are 6 squared off sections, much like the calibre/dial boxes. So maybe there was 6 of them, not sure, but a watch with strap wouldn't fit.

Was Mr “Kinishman” (sorry, cant read those old handwriting…) a watchmaker? Maybe a spare movements order?

Interesting to see that Gruen would do repair on watches “of all makes”. Do they mean like Elgin etc.

Mr Donald Alexander Kinsman, University of Toronto class of 1922. So about 32-33 years old in 1933, with an 8 year old son.

Yes, he is listed 1940 to 1945 in Toronto as a professional watch repairer for W D Kinsman. May be he took over his father's repair shop.

1938 Walter D Kinsman is listed as jeweller and watchmaker, his son as watchmaker.

Nice! That’s what I was seeking but couldn’t find. Wondering if he repaired watches. 6 cavities, a single caliber stamped on the box. Could this be a genuine material/refill box?

It's an old Canadian watchmaker family. Daniel Kinsman is listed in 1861 already as watchmaker in 365 Yonge Street, either the moved or the street was renumbered in between.

You're right, Kinsman's are an old Canadian watchmaker fam...but before that they were an old English watchmaker family from Cornwall. Daniel is Donald's grandfather.
Donald's occupation in 1922 was as a chemist. In 1933 he would have been 36.
