Description
Fake wood box with gold inscription. Has a nice slide out locking feature, why would they not use this over the dreaded hinge or snap they use today? Liz or someone who has the full set please post, the box belongs to a very nice set of boxes. I only have bits and pieces of the full set.

Period : 1920
Box maker : Unknown

I like these ones with the slide too. This box section has peaked my interest in my boxes. I'd like to add some to the database but many I don't know the years to them. Does anyone know when the paper boxes (paper mache) were in use? I thought 30s but not sure...

Matt, you can take a guess and post. When known one of the moderators can move them to the correct forum.

Gary—I have a couple of these, and the wrap around the box seems to be a leather of some sort (later 1930s ones I have a cloth faux leather of similar pattern). I’d read something somewhere about this being shark skin, on these and the early verithin & Quadron boxes.

Am I recalling that correctly?

I think these are all hand-crafted. Masterpieces of the Guild craftsmen in their own right, IMO

My two caveats:
1) I'm wrong many times a day --just ask my wife!
2) Always seeking to learn more

Dan, the ones I have feel paper cloth like, maybe the ones I have are from the 30's.

Liz might check for the skin version on hers whatever they might be.

I'm not surprised if the watch cases were done in leather. I'll need to look closer at mine.
Parts cases really didn't need to be as they weren't meant for display.

Mine are all cloth backed textured paper.
Digging into your Star Case Co lead....it was mentioned several times of their use of "Fabrikoid" and also..."paper Fabrikoid".

"Fabrikoid was an artificial leather manufactured by DuPont. Fabrikoid consists of cotton cloth coated with nitrocellulose. Among other uses it has been used for luggage, bookbinding, upholstery and dress trimmings".
And I saw several references to "display boxes"

This could be the stuff on some of the boxes I believe it's possible that may explain the parts cases. Two of mine; one very papery, the other more faux leather.
Dupont was successful at marketing this to leather using companies during the push for less leather use during WW1.

Today a few of these boxes arrived. One looking like it was chewed on.

On the bottom a little flap that sparked my curiosity. Text?

Right, it's reused paper. Observed the same on mine.
