We now have a Discord channel. Discord is a social VoIP and instant messaging platform. Users have the ability to communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media, and files in private chats or as part of communities.

Discord started out as a gaming community platform but has grown into other hobbyist and nonprofit communities.

Here are some questions I've been getting:

Is this a private venue?
Yes, when you get access, you can only see the "Welcome Channel." You are then added to the "Guild" group by the moderator to see all channels. Anyone can join, but they have to be approved to see all of the Gruen channels.

Do I have to use my real name?
No, you can use the same handle that you use on the forum, but you must have a valid email address.

What is the advantage of using Discord over this forum for social interaction?
Depends, Discord is like a forum with different channels; however, it has instant messaging with voice and video capability.

So keep the questions coming and you are welcome to post them here if you want.

Edit - Oh there is private messaging like we have here, they call it "DM" Direct messaging and it's instant too.

The discord channel was something that Gary had started and was not part of the things turned over for maintenance to Jenneke and me.

All I know is based on hard work & writing by others. I can only aspire to augment this body of knowledge. If I am wrong it is because of my own failings. -me
