Hi,
Nice looking watch. Bit late for my taste but that is neither here nor there. The Gruen Caliber number is 790 CD (CD=calendar date); you can see it on the winding weight. The base model is an A. Schild (AS) 2066 (under the balance wheel). A look around shows that these parts are easy to obtain; I looked in the Jules Borel catalog for one.
That said, there is also the fact that these came in split stem and solid stems. Which one do you need? I suggest that you seek out a new watch maker. I do work but I've a new job (I'm a geologist really) and am having time-management issues dealing with the watches I already have to fix. Timeticker is a good and a competent repair person; another hobbyist like myself. It is getting harder and harder to find professional watch makers that will work on these that don't charge an arm-and-a-leg. From what you said, you value this watch something fierce; you really should seek someone out to do the work for you. Likely it needs more than just a new stem (or crown). You certainly can pick up watch making and do'er yourself. I've been working at it for 4 years now and I'd say I'm marginally competent to do automatics (even worse on 6/0-size Walthams ;^) ), though the AS autos from this time period are all about the same. They seemingly all have a critical flaw in the winding module and I have run into the issue on all but one of the AS movements I've had the joy to work on. Variants of this movement appear under the Bulova, Elgin and Waltham brand names from the late 1950s/early 1960s. The issue is with the axle and bearing on the weight and most others that have worked on these all (I'd bet) to a person will tell you the same.

I do see in your 'Bio' that you are interested in Watchmaking. Also... Curious to see this clock of yours come to fruition. Anyway, Not sure how far down the path you have made it in to the watch making/repairing world. It is easy enough and can be done through some of the old self-learning courses. You can look these up on Google, but I'd suggest getting the Chicago School that our very own Mike Barnett sells (no we don't get commission; it is just that good). There is also the TimeZone school via the internet (though I skipped this in my early learning). The watchuseek.com site has some great info, especially this one which covers the tools needed and discussion on the options.
Keep us posted on your efforts!

As soon as I am able to get the back off of the watch I have, and I believe it is the one you need, then I will definitely let you know. A point to ponder, and something to chew on: Most of these autos were the same movement (25 jewels) and the only difference on many of these, was the dial, and month configuration. This could be cut (month/date) and stamped anywhere on the dial, and had multiple types of hands and dial colors. However, the movements were pretty much the same. Jack made mention of Elgin, Waltham, Gruen, Bulova all using AS movmements.....well, they did, and yes, the culprit was almost assuredly the counterbalance, or oscillating pendulum, as some like to refer it too. I have a couple of these with the very issue Jack refers to.........he is correct! Again, I am having difficulty taking the back off as I cut the thumb off at the distal joint 3-4 months ago, and have lost strength. Yes, I do clocks as well, but that's a whole other sea monster to tame. Ahh, thumb is much better, but still numb and in some areas.

I know this photo was from e bay. And I am seriously considering buying it. But I would prefer replacement components instead, rather than butcher a watch. Besides I am bidding on another Gruen on e bay.
Also in the thread it was said that there is a possibility that I could need a split or a solid stem, as these models could have been equipped with either or.
So really I am looking for precise parts moreso than a entire parts Gruen, or movement. To be exact one of each type of stem. My Dad did tell me that the jeweler suggested that it was the stem that was in need of replacement.
So for now I would just prefer to purchase one of each of the type of stems, if at all possible. If anyone can get me those two exact components, and a price quote I would appreciate it.
