I broke open a modern Gruen quartz watch given to me in a lot of old watches. This baby is Swiss made for sure, will post it in the model identification when I get the chance. Looking for a new battery but cannot find an equivalent.

If you search for yours in the box, it gives a list of replacement for equivalent batteries.
They also have yours in stock!

I tried it and they came up with the 312 which is for most likely the right one as it is a hearing aid battery. These are Zinc air cells which have a different characteristic than the normally used silver oxide baterries for watches. I guess this old model was a mercury cell and as such is nowadays banned.
Gary, most helpful woulfd be measurung diameter and height of the battery at a tenth of millimeter. Then I should be able to find the correct modern equivalent...

Thanks Bernd! Yes by my old vernier callipers the measurements are 1.5 thickness x 6.7 mm in diameter.

I have the 312's on hand and they come nowhere close.

OK, in this case I'd go with a SR616 which is also sold as 321. It measures 6.8mm diameter and 1.65mm height. This is the smallest common battery that should fit.
There is one smaller battery with 1.4mm height which is the SR614 also known as 339. That one is hard to get.
