Gruen Apprentice

I will be selling this Gruen Mens Wrist watch. It is a caliber 3157 with a Gruen-Weber Guildite Case. The round dial has no numbers with Gruen Precision at the top and Switzerland at the bottom. The movement is a caliber 3157 serial number 211642. The case is a Guildite Gruen-Weber Case Co. Geneva Switzerland 202001. Hand scribed numbers on the case indicate that it was serviced in 1969. The number 786255 is hand scribed just above the 202001. The watch runs well and keeps good time. It definitely needs to be cleaned. The wristband has KN1BB on it. Since I am no expert and have found very little to go on as for it's value, I guess some sort of bidding would work but I have no experience selling over a forum so I would like recommendations. I have added some photos showing the scratched crystal and watch with out the crystal and the back. These are taken in bright direct sunlight.

wildtoad lives about 20 minutes from me. We met... Super nice guy (he's a geologist so that is a natural) and he had a nice watch.

Turns out that Gary is right that the dial looks a bit off center. The lug at 10-o'clock was repaired. The dial is really nice; albeit a few marks from wear likely from being uncased. Hands are period correct but the dial has lumed hour markers suggesting that this had luminescent hands at one point. These hands I think are also too short.

I still bought it.

Suggestions on the correct hands would be nice.

Jack, normally I would agree about the hands, but with these 1930s Import models, I have seen a lot of peculiar hand and dial combinations that are not consistent with what you'd expect from normal Gruens. I'm not saying they are original, just that it wouldn't surprise me too much.

Just looking at the late entries in the Import section of the Master Book, you can see that they were using different hands than the regular lines, which generally wasn't the case with the earlier Imports.

One more thought - I've also seen them use regular hands in just that style but actually painted with lume.
And my final thought - I think the hands are the right size. They're short for the case, but right for the diameter of the minutes track.

I appreciate your thoughts. Very Happy

I was looking at the photo again and you are right, the hands do line up with the dial markings nicely. Those hands as they are are nicely blued; I think new lume would look out of place with the old. I'm a bit reluctant to alter the dial at all. Even removing the old lume and replacing with new like on the example you show.

My main concern with this one is the case and the repaired lug. I'll take some better images to show what I'm talking about. I want to get this to wearable condition.
