Other info :This one interesting since it has "Extra Thin" stamped on the back. The 1926 Standardized Part List has it listed as a Semithin. This watch has the look of green gold. The bow and crown were replaced with yellow gold so I might be looking for suitable replacements. I love the patina of the dial! This is my first Gruen pocket watch. The local vendor gave a deal I couldn't refuse.

Other info: personalized inside L.D.W. From 23 dec 1924. Notbthe same watch as Gary’s, but same category. Very Happy It does kinda run and set. But cant wind it (the crown doesnt make the clicking sound and in all positions it moves the hands).

Couldn't wait two days to gift it on Christmas? Maybe it was his birthday. My daughter was a Christmas Eve baby. It seems fun to them until they get to around seven or eight and realize that they're basically getting cheated out of a birthday. Which, in turn, leads to overcompensating.

Yeah, strange isnt it. Birthday, marriage, … not sure why one would engrave this on the inside.

The 5th of december is also a terrible birthday date in the Netherlands. Sinterklaas brings presents for the children.

We have a similar thing called St. Nick's Day. I never quite understood who does and doesn't celebrate it. I know my family didn't. Why have a gift day 20 days before the big one? I guess maybe to keep children from exploding out of anticipation.

My understanding is that in Holland, Christmas is not traditionally a day of gift-giving. That is reserved for 5 December, St. Nicholas' Eve.

Before the Reformation, this was true throughout Europe. The Protestants tried to move the gift-giving day to Christmas and get rid of Saint Nick in the process. They only succeeded half-way.

From the middle ages Sinterklaas feast took place on December 6, the catholic church feast day for Saint Nicholas of Myra. Following the example of the holy bishop, who was known for his anonymous generosity, it was customary during Sinterklaas to give money to the poor. Later this changed to giving presents to children who had been good all year. Today Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands in November with a steamboat full of presents from Spain. With (black/soot wipe) peters. From that day you can put your shoe for the chimney (or radiator) with a carrot and you might get candy. With Sinterklaas the presents come in a jute sack. Sometimes with humorous poems and a fitting surprise (creative packaging like a crafted pinguin or sticky roulade).

And yes, even nowadays they try to change this tradition because of slavery association. But correct Alex, with the reformation Father christmas was introduced. One the elementary school Sinterklaas is celebrated. people normally shift when the children are getting older.

Combine Father christmas with Sinterklaas and you’ll get your Santa Claus. Very Happy

It is a fun tradition—my friends there have younger kids, but they (the adults) get quite into it too. We have a related tradition still in the Cincinnati German folk, where kids leave their shoes outside for St Nick on the Eve and anonymous neighbors leave presents & ring the doorbell.
