Hello everyone Smile

Being that I received no responses to my watch case request( and that's ok too Smile) I am in need of either a complete balance assembly for a 1940 Gruen 415 SS (preferred) or a balance staff for the same. Now, I can do staffing, but I am having a horrific time with my eyes currently and that, getting them to focus for any length of time. Can anyone help out here?

Warmest Regards to all!

A couple of things for you to keep in mind...
the 415 appears in the 1953 catalog for the first time so 1940, it shows it will interchange with the 422 regardless of the sweeps function or not.
the 415 came in two variations one of which is an inca-bloc shock protection.
Borel's website indicates that these staff are available. Also seems to indicate balance completes are available too. Though somewhat at a high price point. Considering that these movements are quite common and not all that popular, one should be had on eBay for a low price.

I just tried the Bay, and I did find a few, but this particular watch is closer to a Military variation, and that's what I'm looking at. This movement screams of 1940/dial/strap, and so on. Now, I'm not sure that Gruen sold to the military direct as in issue, but I think they sold at the USOs and PXs throughout the US. I want to wear this one with my daily uniform, and I have illumination material to re-illume the hands. I did not see the shock protection on this one, but when I referenced the movement in our database, it came up 1940. Jack, am I lost here, or drunk again? Lol!

post a photo of the watch movement. not you drinking. LOL!

The 415/422 caliber series came out in the early 1950s; maybe even in 1950 and likely was the replacement of the 410/420 series of calibers.

So my question is this.........what does the "SS" stand for? The movement I currently have is a "415 SS"

SS indicates sweeps second function

Gee........I thought it meant "Super Stud", or "Semi Stupid" like me! I actually that the SS was relegated to serial number proper and had no idea it meant "sweeps seconds". Ahh, just something you learn along the way. Thanks so much, and have a good laugh on me!
