Actually... ah, no. These apparently come in a positive and negative set flavor.

How disappointing. I'm on a trip but when I get home I'll check the bottle to see if there were any other stems. No need to return that one.

Tomas and Jason,

Thank you for the offers. But don't worry about it....

Now I'm going tell you about a noob-level mistake in diagnosing an issue. Think it boils down to not working on enough pocket watches.

See the bend in the stem in that photo above? I thought that was the issue... but it isn't. That is a feature, not a flaw. The stem is two parts and that pivots. It was rusty and wasn't pivoting. I did not realize this until I pulled out the stem to replace it with the one from Jason. Cleaning the existing stem and improving the depth of the stem sleeve solved the winding issue as to why is was skipping. The second thing on this was that I needed to tighten the canon pinon too. That I did today. Soooooo..... I figure my story will help others.

Thanks again!

Actually... ah, no. These apparently come in a positive and negative set flavor.

What I have found is that the V4 had the same negative setting they fitted to the Precision grades V3/V2/V1/VE at the start of production (serial 450,000).

Then around serial number 470k (earliest I have 472,370) positive setting appears, but negative setting was continued in parallel until at least serial number 522,170.
With at least 50k production between them, running out stock of the negative setting parts looks strange as an explanation.

My assumption why the V4 changed from negative to positive setting is that Gruen took the decision to commonize parts with the V2.5 and V1.5 that were introduced in 1910. A single piece stem is I guess cheaper to produce than a split stem solution.

I was curious about this. It seems like there was some overlap, but I couldn't put anything empirical to that gut feeling. I'm going to move your comment over to the V4 thread in the caliber database. Unless you object to that...

Cheers!
