What I have found is that the V4 had the same negative setting they fitted to the Precision grades V3/V2/V1/VE at the start of production (serial 450,000).

Then around serial number 470k (earliest I have 472,370) positive setting appears, but negative setting was continued in parallel until at least serial number 522,170.
With at least 50k production between them, running out stock of the negative setting parts looks strange as an explanation.

My assumption why the V4 changed from negative to positive setting is that Gruen took the decision to commonize parts with the V2.5 and V1.5 that were introduced in 1910. A single piece stem is I guess cheaper to produce than a split stem solution.
