Hello,
I am brand new to identifying watches and I'm looking for information on my dad's old Gruen. Seems like he said he got it in high school and he would have graduated in about 1950. I'm sorry for the poor photos. Stamped on the outside of the back cover is "31315D," and someone etched on the outside of the back cover "484491" (that's my best guess) or possibly "184491."

Inside the watch is a circled "460SS." Also "Gruenwatch Co Precision Switzerland Seventeen 17 Jewels IG43874 Unadjusted Autowind Veri-Thin Patented"

I hope some of this information is helpful. Looking for the model number and approximate date.

I've cruised the internet and have found some models very similar but not quite exactly the same as this watch.

Any help is appreciated
Thank you,
Scott

Welcome to the forum , Scott.
Looks like you have an "Import 301"
Which has the caliber 460ss Autowind and came in the Guildite case.
Also with the correct dial & hands.
Timeframe would be approx late 40's-mid 50's-ish.

I'll check my collection of ad material to see if I can locate your model in print,
and if I can't find one I'll bet Barney can!

----------------

This ad doesn't have your model but is from the same time frame.

Hey,
I don't have them all. Smile
But this one I would say is one of the watches sold under the name "Autowind Ace". I have about 20 ads showing Autowind Ace versions with different dials from 1949 to 1953. This one seems to be matching:

This version seems to have been advertised in 1952 only.

Best regards
Barney

Barney, that looks like the same model in the '51 ad I posted -The Ace...except for the dial.

Yes,

I have seen the Aces been advertised with different dials and even different cases under the same name in these 5 years. The particular one I added is the version they advertised May 1952 to October 1952. I have not seen that dial at a different time with the Ace.

Thank you, Barney, for your help. That looks exactly like my watch. I've seen others with the minute markers inside the numbers, but the one you found was at the edge of the face. Thanks again.
