Hi,

Have been slowly restoring a Gruen 420SS when I sent the small brass cap that holds the sweep wheel to the 3rd? wheel flying. I've included a picture of the wheel I'm referring to since I probably have my nomenclature mucked up.

I've totally disassembled my workshop (which is only 10x7, an old trunck closet in my 145 year townhome). No luck whatsoever.

I have searched eBay for both the part and even a whole salvage movement. While I've found a few salvage movements, the cost is nearly double what I paid for the original piece.

Before I pull the trigger there I thought I'd try the forum first as I know some members have serious NOS/salvage inventory they use for restoration.

Any and all help greatly appreciated--thanks in advance--Levine98 (hobbyist from Richmond VA).

Does that part interchange with the 410SS, as seen here? (410ss is the 10.5''' version.)

yes, that is one i'm watching. If i don't find a replacement wheel and cap I'll just have to spend $30 on it Sad

The 420SS is based on the 405SS as are the 406SS and 410SS calibers. So I've got ebay searches on all four calibers hoping to find a less expensive salvage movement.

Just bought a $14 salvage movement (411SS) from eBay. They all appear to be based on the 405SS with differences in size and number of jewels determining caliber. Beyond those two distinctions, they all appear to share the same wheels and balance complete.

That is true. Pretty much all the moving parts are shared between the 405/406, 410/411, and 420/421. Just don't tell anyone or the prices will go up! Wink

Hi Levine98,

Talk about learning something new.... never realized that those hubs come off. If you have a lathe, you can make a new one. Minus a lathe, send (via PM) me your mailing address and I'll send a sweeps driving wheel to you. You can send me back the old one, I'll make a new hub for it.

Thanks for the caution. I've recently invested in a respirator mask so i can better deal with this kind of stuff (I hand clean parts in naphtha which is also pretty nasty in a small room with poor ventilation).
