Pocket watch box

...for the person that doesn't really collect pocket watches; Tue, 16 December 2025 04:37

Description

Wooden box with sprung clasping closure for a pocket watch. Case is made of wood, with a single formed inlay of mother of pearl. Heavy lacquer applied to the top surface and sides of the case. The back is minimally finished. Inner case holder has a backing piece that allows for it to be propped-up as shown. Otherwise, lays flat. Has an inner pocket in the inside lid padding. No papers. No hidden compartment under the padding for the watch.

Precision marking to me suggests that this was for a high-end watch, with the matching diamond 'Precision' mark on the train plate. ca 1910 or so... based on this thread. However, we seem to have lost the image that Barney included. There is this ad too - https://vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=msg&th=1568 &goto=11408&#msg_11408

Period:
Watch type: Pocket watch
Size: case diameter of 46.5 mm
Inventor: unknown
Patents: unknown

Box maker: unknown; made in Switzerland

The watch is there for size example of what fits. I do not have a pocket watch that I believe is appropriate for the case.

Inventor: unknown

Box maker: unknown

Other: sticker from the jeweler on 70 Pratt Street in Hartford. The name Lux Bond & Green was first used in 1933. A luxury box so assume it would have contained a diamond paved baguette on a gold bracelet.

- To be honest, I present to you my Christmas gift ;-) Yes, it’s me who gives me my gifts, like that, I’m not disappointed...

Groovy Led

Thu, 15 May 2025 19:18

LED watches were the very first digital watches. Interestingly the American watch manufacturers were in the lead in the digital watches market in the seventies. Not Gruen but Hamilton was the first to advertise a LED watch.

Model name: unknown
Type: LED
Period/date: 1972-1979 (suspect feb 1976 for this watch)
Gender: male

Case Maker: microsonic corp swiss
Case Material: base metal bezel, stainless steel back
Case Serial: -
Case Style no: -

Caliber: 9300?
Movement Maker: unknown
Movement Serial: -

Bracelet: stainless steel.

Other info: A LED watch is an electronic quartz watch with a digital display. Generally has 4 digits with 7 segments each. It is controlled by a tiny digital circuit with one ore more microchips. A 70s LED watch always needs two 1.5 V button cells, every 3 months. 😅 It has several leds in one segment. It is hard to get a good picture of the time… when pushing the button it only appears briefly.
