Caliber 847 “Extra Precision” - 4.5L

This is the first caliber shown in the 1926 Standardized Parts Manual. Barney thought this would be an Aegler caliber, and based on the 4-digit front plate number I think that is true. I have not seen info on any equivalent Aegler caliber from Rolex or another brand.

It is listed as 4.5L. Measures 10.73x17.71mm. I’m guessing this one is ca1923-24.

I had 2 Gruen Factory parts envelopes for this one. They have “4.5L very high grade” written on the front. Thankfully, one of them had an hour wheel, so I’ve placed it on the movement to show. A few more parts before it’s running.

Caliber 879 — Guild A

Switching gears from Favre at long last. This one seems to have come into the arsenal ca1930, building “new for 1931” models. The lowest sn I’ve seen is Dr. Ranfft’s example (1.939mm). Edit: I’ve now seen 879 with sn 1920828.

The below is about 17,000 Aegler numbers later than his, but now has a different patent stamp and a Conoruma hairspring. Edit: corrected my bad math, and note below is a movement that narrows the gap to within 5,400.

This one has a Stern 0.935 Sterling dial.

Not sure what “Size: M” is or what was stricken from the plate above it.

Rebberg sweep second nurse's "trench" watch

Here's a nice watch. Shows what Aegler was up to when they weren't building Rolexes, Gruens, or WSC Gruens. I don't think I've ever seen a Gruen-marked sweep second version.

Caliber V7 17''' - pocket watch

Caliber : V7
Movement Maker : Precision factory (assumed)
Movement Serial: 601k-667k with interruptions

There are two basic types: early and late. They differ in that the early models have jewelled center wheels, while the late models have cap jewels on the escape wheels. The changeover was made during a large break in production between 616k (center wheel) and 642k (escape wheel cap).

The hairspring collet and balance staff also change at some point in production, probably the same point that the hairspring stud changes. Currently this is known to be between 607k and 609k. The early stud resembles that of the earlier production V4. Apologies for the lack of a picture. The later stud is triangular.

This example ca late 1921 or early 1922, after Rebberg stamp disappeared.

Edit: this movement actually measures 10L. As Barney highlights below, later references (post-1926) begin referring to it as 9.75L.

Caliber 151 - (Extra) Precision - 5 1/2 '"

Adding this one into the database. The 1939 standardized parts catalogue lists this as "Extra Precision" grade. Not sure what that means. Was it one of the calibers that got a gold special "Extra Precision" edition for the 50th anniversary?

It is a Gruen Watch Co. caliber--not a Guild caliber--but there is no "Precision" factory serial number. Interesting. It seems to be Favre sourced, like so many 1xx series. Not sure what additional finishing, if any, Gruen did. Perhaps just grinding a bevel on the narrow ends of the front plate?

This one adjusted for temperatures only, I'm guessing mid- to late 1920s. Coded L 19.

Gübelin Quadron

The case is sterling silver with a pale solid gold (I would say green, maybe yellow) crown guard. In some of the pictures it looks like there may be wear on the corners. They're just reflections. The unusual contours make it difficult to photograph. I believe that the movement is an actual Gruen 157. I'd normally think it just shares the same Favre ebauche as the 157...except in the lower right corner, it's marked "GR 157". So I do suspect that Gruen itself was the supplier. In this thread...

...Jack said that his research suggests that this bridge arrangement started around 1933, and based on the styling, I don't think it would be much later than that, hence my estimation of 1933.

Caliber 771 - WSC - 13’” - 15J

Guess it was just a matter of time before we found a Schild in the early Gruen movements. This is the AS 137 / 153 caliber, which I think was standard issue for NCOs in WW1. Could Gruen have gotten in on that?

It’s missing setting works (will be trying to source). There are three Gruen 15J, 13L candidates. Looking at works of many other AS137, I think it could be Gruen’s 775. Thoughts? (Edit: actually the 771, see below)
