Alpina Acier Inoxydable

Not a perfect dial and has been loved by a previous owner. Glass not perfect, but better looking IRL.

Alpina Gruen Gilde

Sun, 23 February 2025 19:36

Another pocket watch for the collection. I bought this for the marking that is at the 6-o'clock position:
/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11404&private=0

I've a few other 'Gilde' marked watches and I had always assumed that the 'Gilde' name was just another sub-branded Alpina (like the Siegerin watches) and post Gruen's departure from the collaboration. Not sure what to think. Stuff to ponder: When did the Gilde name start (and yes, I know that it is gilde = guild)? Did the use outlast the split of Alpina and Gruen? Was it contemporaneous to Siegerin?

Here is the rest of the watch, cased in a chromed nickel case.
Caliber 355, 18-ligne in size.

/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11406&private=0
/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11403&private=0

Gruen's Cal 355 is a different movement all together: https://vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=21 69
and here too: https://vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=msg&th=284& amp;start=0&

Very similar watch on the Gruen.watch website, which shows a case composition marking. Proximity of the case serial is interesting too.

Size: 11 x 15 cm

The PA Hawk is mentioned in a different thread and the image is not the best. A recent review of any new ads added into the Newspaper.com database has this one for the PA Hawk, which seemingly isn't shown elsewhere on this or other forums*:
/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11336&private=0

I'll go further out onto the limb here and suggest that the case style (not the dial) is a match to this watch, with the Star Watch Case Co. made case:

/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11338&private=0
/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=11337&private=0

I've not seen this one ID'd elsewhere.

A robin egg blue box of hand finished mainsprings.

Patents: Hmmm...

Don't you just love the font on this box! This dates well before the Time Hill era. And check out the detailed notice on the back, holy Toledo!!!

I would pull the springs out but have to do it under a blanket, noting better than metal spaghetti flying about. Enjoy!

Gruen Baron Pictures and Questions

New Member Gruen Baron; Thu, 18 January 2024 14:38

/vgforum/index.php?t=getfile&id=10928&private=0

New member here.  I inherited my grandfather's Gruen, which I think is a Baron; don't know the year; any help with that would be appreciated.  My grandfather died in 1969, so the watch has been sitting in a drawer since then.  I would like to get it running with a new crystal and cleaned a little.  Is there a service that you folks recommend? I would appreciate any comments that you may have. Thanks, and I am looking forward to spending some time with the community.
