The caliber 707

Guild-era movement; Sat, 15 June 2013 16:11

The caliber 707 is a 15 jewel movement and is 12-1/2 ligne or 28.4mm in diameter. The caliber 713 is a 7-jewel variant of this movement. Although these are commonly marked on the pillar plate with the caliber number, usually in the space between the escape wheel finger and the balance wheel, occasionally they are unmarked.

Curvex movement; Sat, 15 June 2013 16:01

The caliber 440 is 17 jewels and is 8-3/4 x 9-3/4 ligne or 19.4mm x22mm. It is the third Curvex movement that was produced by Gruen and shares parts with the caliber 430 and 435. This caliber is clearly marked with the number in the space between the barrel bridge and the balance cock.

The caliber 330 is 17 jewels and is 7-3/4 x 11 ligne or 17.2mm x 24.81mm. It is the second Curvex movement that was produced by Gruen. This caliber is usually marked with the number next to the mainspring barrel on the exposed underside of the top plate.

The caliber 410

Thu, 13 June 2013 20:47

This is the caliber 410, a 17 jewel movement that is 10.5 ligne or 23.7mm in diameter. Almost all parts will interchange with others in the 405-series. The only difference between the 410 and the 420 is the size; other wise it is fully interchangeable. These movements are always marked with the caliber number in the space next to the balance wheel and the cap jewel for the escape wheel.

The caliber 426

Thu, 13 June 2013 12:56

The image (from MikeyT) is the caliber 426, a 15 jewel movement that is tonneau-shaped and 9-3/4 ligne or 22mm in size. The caliber number is clearly stamped next to the balance wheel on the pillar plate. This is similar to the 425 (17-jewels) and like others in the 405-caliber series interchanges almost completely with the other 15-jewel versions.

Other info :
Dietrich Gruen started production in 1876 under the name Columbus Watch Co.. This example is from the second year of production.
Interesting detail is the reference to Gruen's patented safety center pinion, which was a Gruen USP at the time.
The dial word mark is made up of the letters "CWCo" and has some similarity with the later "DSG" word mark.
Hand painted words on dial center most likely owners name, but too damaged to be able to read.

Long case Regal 1939

First deiberate purchase for Curvex collection; may be best one.; Tue, 11 June 2013 22:51

A single bidder ebay offer some months past is first long case Curvex for me. Shown here with well known 1937 Gruen ad featuring its gold fill case version Royalty. This one 14k case Regal with original plated metal band. Dial seems original. Was well used but solid golds survive better. Plated band and dial show its 1939 age.
