Gruen VT Moderne / Technician / Shadow

Have you seen the Moderne?; Wed, 17 August 2022 00:28

The GS crystal MT360-5 is listed as a fit for the Veri-Thin Moderne, Technician, and Shadow.

We've all seen the Shadow illustration from the Billy Rose Aquacade ad, and the Technician is pictured in an ad with other watches.

Has anyone seen the Moderne?

Strap 184 - Winged Disc

1927 Date; Sat, 13 August 2022 05:27

Couldn't find this discussed elsewhere, so I thought I'd start a new topic.

Flipping through the Gruen photo books, I often stop to peer at Strap 184. The winged disc logo stands out, but I couldn't find any info on it, or when it was made. Today, while watching promotional footage celebrating the Lindbergh flight, I saw the watch. Well, almost,
because the watch in the video is labeled Avigo.

Went back to Strap 184 to check the logo, only to be reminded it's obscured by the bulbous luminous hour hand. But there it is, without luminous on the dial, the same winged disc design language, quarter Arabics, and circular lume plots, only aircraft wings instead of Egyptian iconography.

As the story goes, the Avigo was released to commemorate Lindbergh's successful transatlantic flight, which means the design for the commemorative dial on Strap 184 is likely no earlier than 1927. As for the name hidden under the hour hand, who penned the dial design, or who brought it to market first, I'll leave that for someone else to investigate.

Case Material: 14K yellow gold
Case Serial: U25393
Case Style no: 440 - 584

This model is quite flat – unusual for a Curvex:

Inside there are two trademarks of William B. Ogush, Inc. (WBO in the following), the well-known WBO logo

and the lesser known “two diamonds” trademark of WBO:

I guess, the „two diamonds” brand was used to mark the case material – in this case, 14K gold.
A good abstract of WBO’s history was published in the „Cincinnati Enquirer“ of June 28, 1951:

There were two dial variants – the one shown with 12 numerals and a variation with markers and numerals (2-4-8-10-12):

Gruen Superior Verithin (LV)

Tue, 19 July 2022 17:59

Model name: Gruen Superior Verithin
Type: Pocket Watch
Period/date: 1900-1910, perhaps 1906-1907
Gender: Men's

Case Maker: Wadsworth
Case Material: 25 yr Gold Filled Amer. Made
Case Serial: 308892
Case Style no: n/a

Caliber: LV2, 16j, with swan neck regulator
Movement Maker: Gruen (unsigned)
Movement Serial: 330600 ?

Other info: I am not usually a pocket watch guy, but the Superior Verithin movement is an odd bird. Looking back, I've seen exactly 6. None captured on the forum so far (I think), and only a few oblique references. I'm hoping folks may have seen more & have more info. Only seller pics for now (with permission).

The bat box

Tue, 19 July 2022 11:57

Now this can be called an innovative and unique watch box. Wonder if they made just one...

A solid gold autowind presented to Cincinnati Redlegs slugger Ted Kluszewski in November 1955. This "box" should be worth some money...
