Picked this one up recently. Paris square era, in a sterling cushion case. My first time seeing this movement.
I think it may be a cal 93. Battery dead in my caliper so can't confirm 11 ligne, and haven't been under dial yet to check setting bits but it appears to be a cal 93.
Can anyone confirm this is a cal 93?

GRUEN purse watch / travel watch

Only seen a photo once before; Tue, 09 August 2016 09:45

I have announced to get an interesting Gruen a few weeks ago, after 2 month I got it in the post yesterday. Here are a few quick and dirty photos. I found only one single photo in the web of such a model before. There I have seen that it did have a bow to wear the watch attached to some kind of chain.
The case is stamped GRUEN W. Co. twice, the dial says GRUEN and the movement GRUEN GUILD, so it is all authentic for a true Gruen. The hallmarks in the sterling silver case are for the Huguenin frères Niel factory in Le Locle, there is also a patent mark with the #98835 in the case which is the patent for such kind of folding case for this case factory. It was filed for in 1922 and issued in 1923, so 1923 is the earliest possible date for this watch. The 885 movement would put it towards 1925 or later. The watch is not mentioned in the 1927 or 1929 Guild books or the 1931 amendment so I tend to believe the watch might be from 1925 or 1926. Any thoughts about a date?

Ladies All Star H, I think

Tue, 12 July 2016 17:11

I saw in another post that a watch like mine was called an All Star H, circa 1952. Those 50s ladies must have been bony; the bracelet is tiny compared to a modern watch!

More than 800 watches with about 5000 pictures

Sat, 09 July 2016 20:48

As many of you already know I run a Gruen website ( whith a huge gallery of more than 800 Gruen watches with about 5000 pictures. The watches are grouped in different categories (pocket watches, Quadron, Curex, Veri-Thin, Gruen 21, Autowind etc.). There is a search function included for fast retrieval of individual watches in relation to movement serial number (only pocket watches), marking of the dial, caliber and style number. Nearly every watch is displayed with a front, two side and a back picture as well as a picture of the inside of the watch cover and often different pictures of the movement. More than 200 sellers and collectors have contributed with pictures of their watches but still many more watches are missing. Therefore I would appreciate the help and support of the whole Gruen community to send me pictures of their watches for adding them to the gallery.
Please find the gallery and more information here:

index.php?t=getfile&id=2904&private=0Hello everyone,

I recently came across 3 Gruen watches all "New Old Stock" the watches have never been worn and have the original tags, box and prices on them from 1940. They all have been serviced and taken care of.

By providing pictures I was hoping you could help me identify each watch by model and movement and value. You guys are wizards at this and I can't wait to hear your opinions on each timepiece, sadly I only have 2 sets of photos, the third is on the way!

Gruen Electronic

Thu, 12 May 2016 18:23

Model name : Gruen Electronic
Type :
Period/date : 1969-1970
Gender : Mens

Case Maker : Hong Kong
Case Material : SS
Case Serial : 150CA-357A
Case Style no :

Caliber : 9154 - 13 jewels
Movement Maker : ESA
Movement Serial: Y2 ?

Bracelet : Gruen black leather/suede (period?), 17mm lugs.

Other info : Interesting that the battery retainer clip is likely from another watch movement. It shows 11 jewels while the movement itself is marked 13 jewels. Watch is in beautiful condition and runs very well at 28,800 BPH/ This ESA movement (called the Dynotron) was launched in 1967. While it wasn't the first watch movement to employ transistors (that honour goes to the Accutron), it was the first movement to employ both a transistor and a balance assembly.
