Hi All,

Purchased my first Gruen wristwatch! Looking for confirmation/completion of what I think I was able to identify below from here and other resources. Any other info you think might be helpful about this watch is appreciated too! I had a tough time finding much searching the "260" style number from the caseback, but the thread on here titled "Is this a curvex from 1936?" ID#12489 (sorry can't post links yet!) was helpful in identification. I'm also interested in what bands folks have chosen for the curvex, I'm not thrilled with expansion bands in general, this one seems to emphasize the narrow dimension rather than the long one. I've heard band choice can make a huge impact on these watches. Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

You've got a great choice there for a first Gruen watch, and it looks to be in fine original condition!

I don't like expansion bands either, and that one is certainly not original to the watch. I would recommend a conservatively-styled leather band, perhaps in dark brown or black, to allow the watch to be the focal point. These metal bands distract the eye.

My Curvex (a 440/450 Trooper, and not as long as yours) does well on a black band with off-white contrast stitching.

Aren't these Wadsworth cases?

Technically, yes, the 2 million series were by this time made by Wadsworth. But it’s still only signed Gruen.

Interesting. I didn't know that there were unsigned Wadsworth cases.

Updated the case maker! Also caught the embarrassing dyslexic spelling of Gruen throughout!

Thanks,
Evan

For some reason, when editing, all Gruens will show as "Gruen". But if you don't change it, it will still be right when you post the edit.

I have wondered why for some time, but hey, it's sort of not actually broken...

Edit: I tried to misspell it in the initial post and it autocorrected on posting. So there you have it!

Not the forum that is asking you. Laughing

We have a censorship rule table for Gruen. Let me know if you have suggestions for others. I'd be happy to help, I love you.

The major flaw in the "censorship table" is that it not only replaces "G r e u n" with "G r u e n" but actually if you spell it correctly, but then go back and edit your comment for additional info or context....then all your correct spellings of " G r u e n" show up as " G r e u n" in the edit box, making you think you spelled it wrong, then you waste time correcting it when u don't need to, as it did to Veepster. Took me awhile to figure that out. Laughing

My solution is to avoid editing at all costs. I feel like a hair-brained dingbat when I see that notation that my post has been edited.

A modest mod suggestion - a lot of boards have a feature where there is no notation of editing as long as you get your edits in within a short timeframe and before there are any replies. It makes quick edits for typos and such less fraught with psychological terror. Or I could just lighten up.

For example, I would like to go back and change "hair-brained" to "harebrained", but my outsized sense of dignity and decorum won't allow for it.

Interesting. Glad that works for you. Not an option for me. I definitely do not feel, like a dingbat for editing a comment if necessary. Veepster clearly found the need update his post, which I think is legit for any reason, yet he fell into the loop....

Guys Laughing

Back to the original wuestion (question). Strap. I only wear my ladies curvexes but do have a male model. This is on an expensan (expansion) band. “Straight” simple bars which I like. And the stretch make putting it on and off very efficient I must say.

Right. If Veepster is trying to get away from the expansion bracelet then I would suggest for his Curvex the same type strap that I suggested for dr. rauls Curvex. Pigskin.

Agreed. That's the only style of band that looks right to me on a 1930s yellow gold watch.

Update, got my Curvex serviced at Time Restoration, Jeff did great and had a super quick turnaround compared to any watch service I’ve had by mail or in person. He also had an NOS pigskin band so that’s what I opted for.
