This cartouche has the "PF" stamped on the back, looks like it was added after in initial die stamping.

Seller is claiming 18K white gold.

Platinum filled? Would that be a new one for the Gruen books?

I'm thinking the PF is probably a factory marking. There'd be no reason to forge such an ambiguous notation. Could it stand for platinum filled? Sure. And if you zoom in on the pictures of the case back, in some well areas (right side of upper edge, middle of lower edge), it looks like there could be a brighter thin layer on the outside. I think your guess is as good as any.

Possibly of some relevance to this discussion is the mention of platinum reinforced case in this Gruen flier:

Think I found it. "Platinum Faced" out of the Guild book.

Here's the snippet from the '29 book on how this is put together -

I'm curious about the "I" like symbol marked on the band?

Platinum face. Sounds like a Bond villain.

Reviving this to document the observation. "P F"

Good call Gary. And supporting evidence from one of my octagon wristlets. PF = Plat. Faced

Interestingly enough, Gruen referred to the process as "Platinum Top" in its literature & marketing.
