Model name : Veri-Thin Submarine
Type :
Period/date : 1951
Gender : Male

Case Maker : Star
Case Material : Guildite
Case Serial : 0504299
Case Style no : 725

Caliber : 421 in this example
Movement Maker : Gruen
Movement Serial: need to dig up from original photos

Bracelet : All ads I have show leather bracelet

Other info :

The submarine is one of the few Gruen's I've seen that the model name and look stay 100% the same, as does the Style Number, but the movement switches. It not only switches, but it goes from a round to a rectangular model.

Interesting that the 'migration' as coined in the Style Number dating article, was done in a purposeful way as can be seen using the casebacks. In the photo, one indicates a caliber 421 movement is in the watch, the other a 426.

Nice clean watch! I like that "rope" around the bezel.

Why did they call it "non-breakable crystal"? Is it a clever way to say it is plastic? Or is it special glass?

Veri nice! Makes me wonder if we had Gruen sales records if any were sold to the sub makers like the electric boat company. I've been on the watch for one for a long time but it takes penitence to look at the 6 o'clock position for that sub.

Sorry couldn't resist.

I like how well the dials on these restore. Of the round 1950's Gruens, it's one of my fav's.

I had this picture of the side, showing the rope as Jenneke pointed out, ready to post with the others but didn't know if I should post it or not since that shot isn't in the template. The rope is what makes it identifiable from across the room.

That sub that floats on the dial seems to dive often enough that I can't catch a good picture of it. I know it's in there somewhere, I'm sure of it.

Since I've been aware of this model (maybe a couple of years) I've seen quite a few and none of them have had the little submarine at 6:00. I'm starting to wonder if it's just something in the ad illustration that never was actually produced. Of course, I could be wrong. But I've never seen one.

Yea, I'm afraid that dial ship has sailed. The idea sunk.
