Hello,
Earlier I was unable to post pics of my watch so thanks to info I gleaned from other members postings, I emailed them to myself which allowed me to change the file size (I think) Confused .

YIPEE!! The pics uploaded with no problems. For all you collectors and watch admirers, please enjoy. As I stated in an earlier post, I am hoping someone can narrow down an insurance value for me. I think it's value is somewhere between $9000.00 and $19,500.00, depending on several variables I don't know the answers to; current gold prices, how many were manufactured, how many are in circulation, etc. It is my understanding from a collector in a different forum that most or all the production records were lost when the Norwood facility closed, so there may be no way to get the answer I am looking for, but any info is definitely appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob L.

Um, yeah......that's worth a small fortune!!!! I do not see these chromos that often. Maybe Barney, Mr Hurt, or some of the others can weigh in on the value. I have no idea what this may be worth, but its a beautiful watch, and of considerable value.

Kindest Regards,
Tomas

Thanks Timeticker. It seems my watch is too rare to get a value narrowed down. I think I will go ahead and pass this heirloom to my son so he can decide (and worry)(lol). Thanks again.

Bob,

it is not easy to determine a value of a vintage watch. A vintage watch is always exactly worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Your watch is pretty rare and technically outstanding. Plus it is in pristine shape, so I assume that a number of serious collectors would be interested. That should lead to a sales price in the 3 to 5k$ range.
I personally would not spend that money currently but I know others might do...

Best regards
Barney

I tend to agree with Barney's ballpark estimate. And, Bob, I also agree that it's too rare to really pin down an accurate value, which leaves Barney's estimate just that - an estimate. I can't imagine that it wouldn't fetch at least $3000, but at the same time, wouldn't be shocked to find that the right buyer would pay significantly more than $5000 either. Just doing a little preliminary searching, wind indicators in general do seem to add a significant premium. But there are so many variables that it's way beyond my scope of knowledge to say how that would translate to this watch. Most of us here have a pretty good grasp of the wristwatch market. Speaking for myself, my limited knowledge of pocket watch values is largely incidental to my searching for wristwatches. And I suspect the same is true for many others here. On the other forum, somebody mentioned Art Bissell. He's not a member here or at vintagewatchforums.com, but if somebody could get you in touch with him, I'm sure he'd have a good grasp of what this watch could likely fetch. Gruen pocket watches are his specialty. And he could probably educate you on the finer points of that movement.

At my next chapter meeting I will ask a member who recently purchased the same up/down DG as yours. They purchased it at the national event last year.

Art is a member here but seems to have focused his forum participation elsewhere. I also emailed him and he sent his reply back via email but didn't offer anything that was overly insightful. He wrote, "Most of the Dietrich dial marked p.w. are from several high grade LeLocle sources not Gruen designs. Since they include a variety of complex and expensive movements not GRUEN designed I do not consider them GRUENs. Avoiding their expense."

Interesting perspective. If applied to wristwatches, that would exclude a whole lot of great models.

I was under impressed myself.

I do feel good in that Bob has a better understanding of the value of his family heirloom treasure.

Some things are truely priceless.

current gold prices
This type of watch, the vagaries of the gold market will not have as much impact as the shifting moods of collectors and the over-all economy.

I tend to agree with Barney's and Afire's value estimates, but I'm not sure that these are quite as rare as some believe. A google search on "Dietrich Gruen Wind Indicator" turns up several examples including one (in a later case and incorrect box) currently listed at Bogoff. There are at least three others sold in online auctions.

General consensus is that these were made by Lecoultre, although Meylan or Aggasiz are possibilities. Over the years that they were offered, they show up with minor variations that could be attributed to different makers. Jack Goldberg, Tom McIntire, Ben Hsiung and Ethan Leipsig are all pocketwatch collectors of far greater depth and means than me, and might be able to give more detail.

Regardless, a nice watch

Many thanks to all of you for your insight and for sharing with me. To me this watch is priceless due to my family history and the information you have shared makes it even more valuable, to me and my loved ones. I can not thank you all enough.
