I made my way to the local watchmakers meeting this morning. I was lollygagging around with a five o'clock shadow, maybe twelve o'clock. I grabbed a cup of tea and made it in time for the mart. At the mart a fellow student and well known pocket watch guru hobbyist brought in some watches. Behold was this odd looking Gruen in the mix. The white/yellow gold mixed case looked odd, didn't look like the typical Gruen case. The price seemed good so needless to say I bought it.

Got it home and poped the back, whoa! Anyone know the model and a good band one would go with?

That's a great find and a wonderful watch. I don't recall ever seeing such "fat" numbers before.

I got a couple of dials like that.....fact, I got a slew of 157, and 117 parts. Quadrons can be finicky!!! Nice watch by the way!!

Gary,

I do believe that you have a Quadron 61 on your hands. OMG!!! Have you looked at the info on Bruce's book, pages 16 and 17?

jeebus! That is the score of a lifetime.

Congrats.

Also are you sure that isn't green gold with the white gold?

As for the band... I'd suggest a nice black band with a solid gold buckle to match.

Post more pictures too!

Yes I'm not sure but it could be a tri-color gold. I have to get some better pictures. I won't even quote a price here, I was stunned when I popped the back off. At first I thought it was a knock-off because I've never seen a case like that. Almost had me believing this was post 50's Gruen. I guess the price really threw me for a loop.

Anyway I'm not familiar with the strap 61 and I don't hold Bruce's book. Does it resemble a Dartmouth?

The Dartmouth is in a goldfilled case with a cal 325.

I sent a note to Bruce because in his book he states that the Quadron 61 is likely a one of a kind. Your's matches the one he features right down to the engraving on back. Hence I would appreciate a side shot of your watch. Unfortunately, the one in the book is featured in BnW images. But lists a cal 119 in an two-tone 18K Weber case.

It also dawned on me that Bruce's guide book features the 61 on the cover. In color. See the side of yours adds confidence to the ID, in my opinion. Go look at the listing in Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0615505163/ref=rdr_ext_tmb

Also, the serial number is visible in the book too on the case 102268

Also, circa 1930.

Honestly, I'd defy anyone that say otherwise over the ID on your watch.

Veeeery nice! Just had a look in Bruce's book - Looks like it is worth investigating E. Dubois, Detroit.

Great score!!

I guess for the time being I'll have to live with "just" a Dartmouth that I bought for 40 bucks this weekend Wink

Seller's picture, so the real condition still a surprise.

Where might I find this picture in the Ehrhardts book? I see an Import 38 on Page 101 that looks similar. Help!

AHHHHH!!! I see it on Page 24. Is it okay that the dial is different? Gruen used many dials. Thanks.
