I've recently been asked to help identify my late father's Gruen. I remember him wearing this piece in the '70s, but I don't know anything about the watch. Naturally, he didn't retain the original box or papers and the factory strap/bracelet is long gone. I received the two attached photos from my mother (forgive the blurriness) and would greatly appreciate any info that might point me in the right direction. Model name/number, movement details, approximate year of manufacture, etc.
Thanks for all!
Regards,
Ken

Hi Ken,
wow, very nice Gruen in a good shape.
The model is called the Autowind Carlo and was built in 1972. It was available in white stainless steel case and yellow gold plated, the dial should be dark blue although it looks black from the photo. Self-winding, day-daste at 6. The movement is a 17 jewel one, I assume it is the caliber 780CD, I have a similar model from that time coming with it. Caliber 780CD is the Gruen variant of the AS1916. The watch did cost $99.50 in the white stainless steel version and the gold plated one did cost $109.50.
It should easily be possible to replace the cracked crystal.

Hi Barney,
Thanks very much for the info! The dial is, indeed, dark blue. Is it a 'Carlo' or a 'Monte Carlo'? I've been having some difficulty locating period photos of the piece, its Gruen catalog entry, etc. What sort of bracelet would have come with the stainless version?
Thanks for all!
Ken

Hi Barney,
Fantastic!! Thanks very much for the period ad image. I'll keep an eye out for a suitable bracelet; the poorly fitting Speidel twist band that my father inexplicably fitted has to go.
Best regards,
Ken
