I'd say this is a 1954 Patriot...
Dial and serial number make me think that it is either a late model probably built in 1956 or it is a similar model to the Patriot from that time.

How do I search the movement serial number? That is the 367# right?

The movement serial number is 2A367148, it was split on your movement.

Hey there Barney,

Quote:

You know something on the movement serials that is new? Or new to me?

Mike's and Barry's case style number returns a date of 1951 on the 750, which is a nice lower limit for the watch.

I don't diagree that it looks later 50's... the case is similar to the strap 947 (p178 of Bruce's book) but the dial seems more strap 1006 (p184, ibid). Mike B's 1950 Decade book isn't showing anything that looks like the watch in question, between 1952 and 1955. There are dials back to 1950 that are using only indices and markers rather than numbers for the hours. The fact that the watch has a cal 435 in it makes me want to error towards the earlier side of the decade. To me, starting about 1955, most manual wind watches (non-Curvex) seem to be either a cal 415/422 series (round) or the cal. 335 (barrel). But that Gruen font on the case back screams later 1950s. Even post 1958. Weird one to try to nail down.

Jack,

I share your thoughts about that watch. I would also ID the watch as the Strap 947, it definitely is a reuse of style number 750. Strap 947 aka Patriot was introduced late 1954 and at least sold until 1956.
And yes, I have some research ongoing on a) movement serials and b) case serials.
My collections spans more than 1000 Gruens now which gives at least in certain areas enough samples for valid statistics allowing some rough estimates already.

That would be 2029 if our finance minister does not change this again. In case I do not spent all my spare money on watches it might be a bit earlier...

I'm stunned and impressed with this number! My wife thinks that my 60 strong collection is a bit much...now I have a counter argument. Laughing

Now you know why I mainly have women's models. Smile
Otherwise my wife would have probably stopped me as well. But I am almost sure that I might have the biggest Gruen ladies watch collection world wide...

Hello Barney Green!!!

Happy days for me! Now that I know you have the largest ladies collection of Gruens, then I'll be asking a ton of questions. Although I can identify a great majority of my ladies pendants, I have some that are just "out there"! I have about 3-400 watches, but not all Gruen. I have a great deal of pocket watches, as that is where I started restoring time pieces. However, the transition to Gruen wrist watches has been a wonderful but sometimes painful transition in that I just don't know all the model names, styles, and the likes. Would you mind if I pick your brain on some of these?

People you thought were your best friends will stab you in the back to your face!

Love them anyway.

You are welcomed Thomas!

We travelled the same way, I have also started with pocket watches some years ago, but got addicted to Gruens by coincidence.
Feel free to ask questions as much as you like and I will give answers as much as I like Smile

Best regards
Bernd

I am happy to be able to announce that Jack was heard. Mike has published the first part of the case serial number work on his website. For the years 1940 to 1954 there is a simple table for Gruens in house cases as well as Keystone and Star serials within that time frame which we have started to work at.
You can find the latest version of this table and other serial number tables on the GruenWristwatches (www.gruenwristwatches.com) site's Serial Numbers page: www.gruenwristwatches.com/serial-numbers.php

Stay tuned.... more to come!
