index.php?t=getfile&id=3259&private=0Hi,
I was very happy to find this group.
I need help to identity my Grandfather's watch. If anyone would know the model and what it could be made from.
I don't have an antique watch repair shop near me and I am not comfortable taking the back off myself.I have searched best I can and have not found one exactly like it.
I have owned it for 40 years and to the best of my knowledge it is in original condition.
Any info on it much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,

That is a very nice watch; it is very collectible, reasonably valuable (price wise) and a quality piece.

There isn't a name to it but it is what was part of the Techniquadron line that Gruen was selling through the mid/late 1920s and into the 1930s. Inside should be the Gruen caliber (movement) #877.
Here is a link to a discussion at another forum on a similar watch with the same caliber movement - http://vintagewatchforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=33224

It is possible that your watch is either the Quadron 73 or 75 depending on the case being gold filled or karat gold. The lack of any apparent wear spots on your watch makes me wonder if it is karat gold.

With you noting that you are in Atlanta, I'm sure that there is a reputable watch maker that can handle any work the watch may need.

I fully agree witch Jack. This ist one of the Techni-Quadrons with Crown-Guard which was available around 1930. Very nice and collectible watch!

Weblore,

I am in no way as experienced in watch repair, or service as Jack or Barney is, but I am competent in my abilities, and am learning Gruen watches quite well. My Point? Try and find someone who knows these watches inside and out, and for the record, I do not, so I am not setting myself up for work. However, often people will say they can work on these watches, and can really botch these up. I know this all too well. This is such a beautiful piece, and needs the skilled hands of someone who works on these watches. When you do find a repairman, check their credentials and reputation.

Thanks to each of you for the information.
I am in the boonies of Atlanta burbs but there was a gentleman years ago that had a repair shop in a little red caboose.Antique Watch Company is the name.
My Mom had used him for servicing my Dad's watch about 20 years ago.
He has since moved to Franklin, NC.
I emailed him today to get a referral for anyone he might know here to clean and value the watch for me.
I could send the watch to him in Franklin if need be.
It has sat in a drawer for a very long time and I know it needs cleaning.
It ran when I last had it out years ago but I read recently if a watch has been sitting a long time, not to wind it up as it could damage it due to lack of oil inside.
Not sure if this is correct but I'm hesitant to wind it.

Much appreciation for the info. I could not find much of anything on this exact watch out there. Similar watches but not the info you all gave me.

Hi Anne,

which additional information are you missing? I think we can add some more information if you specify what you want to know.
Here comes a very early ad of your watch, the first I own dates September 1st, 1929. This should be about the introduction date of this watch, the last ad I have is from February 1936. Quite a long availability of this model compared to others.

Best regards
Bernd

Weblore,

Yes, you are correct! Running a watch that has sat for a long time, and has not been serviced, will certainly mess some things up. There is a guy in North Carolina I know that could work on that watch for you. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll send you his contact information.

Kindest Regards,
Tomas

Thanks for everyone's input and the copy of the fantastic ad.
I did find someone here in Roswell, Ga that can service it.
He just opened the back yesterday to identify that it is 14k gold filled.
He also had an appraiser there that gave me a value for insurance purposes. I was surprised they are more valuable than I would have thought.
I made the decision to try to sell it. It has sat in a drawer in my home for many years and now that I find it has a decent value, I would be less inclined to wear it as I am so hard of just regular cheap watches.
Someone will take great pleasure in wearing it and it won't be resigned back to the drawer again. It should be worn.
I think I'll let the buyer choose their own watch person and not do anything to it on my own.
It has stopped a couple of times but this watch has sadly not been serviced in the 30 some years I've had it.
Thanks again for all the good advice and time in doing so.

At least let us know when and where you're selling it. It would be interesting to know its value

Yes. It's on eBay. I took it to an antique watch repairman Saturday.
He gave me an insurance value of 1800-2200. I didn't say I was selling it for fear he would overinflate the appraisal and then try to low ball offer to buy it.
Seemed a good guy and he opened the back but I didn't think to get photos of the inside of the case.
I'm hoping to take it and get it opened tomorrow.
Thanks for everyone's input.
I'm sad to part with it but knowing an approximate value now, I would be even more hesitant to wear it and it needs worn, taken care of and enjoyed. Not sit in a drawer.

Having just completed 25 yrs in the insurance claims industry, I've found that every insurance appraisal is inflated. I've yet to see one that is an accurate reflection of the actual value of a jewellery item. They are a 'feel good' piece of paper as the appraiser wants you to feel good about the job he just did for you.

Still here....
