Liz,
What model is it? I would YouTube the model and see if you can open it with some instructions. My guess is the cable to the hard drive may have come loose.
Else send it up my way and I will try to recover it. No charge for looking.

Gary,
It's an HP Pavilion Win 7.
If I can get it open, and the cable is loose, is reconnecting it easy? Or would something need to be resoldered?

Liz,
Nothing to solder, either the power supply cable connector or IDE I/O cable may have came loose.
Some things to check before going forward.
-Shut down the laptop, disconnect the power supply.
-Pull the battery out to rest laptop.
-Put the battery back in, connect power supply and turn on, see if it recognizes it.
Also can you hear the drive spinning?
That would be the first to check before taking it to a professional, that is if it's too much trouble to get it open.

Haven't been able to tackle this yet, Jenneke, but have been doing research on different methods of retrieval. Just have to wait and see.

I just went thru this with an HP Pavilion laptop. First diagnosis was a broken or damaged cable connecting the hard drive to the mother board. Hard drive was removed and was recognized in another unit so we knew the HD was okay. Cable was replaced and it still didn't recognize the HD. Motherboard was examined and it turned out that the controller had failed & isn't worth fixing. Usually though, the HD is okay and can be connected to another laptop to confirm.
Still here....
