Beautiful presentation of a wristlet! Mine are all cobbled up a drawer. If I could all of mine would have boxes like Jenneke's.

Cool find! It looks like the companion to the men’s interchangeable. The earliest ad I’ve seen for the mans was 1922. Could this have debuted the same time?

Hi Dan, this box you are showing is likely a ladies box and watch according to this different ad here from same time period. Looks like it includes a sportstrap, an attached black ribbon with clasp, and another 6 additional colored ribbons.

You’re correct! I checked the other ad I have, and it also mentions ribbons.

My two caveats:
1) I'm wrong many times a day --just ask my wife!
2) Always seeking to learn more

And this one box with extra straps can be found in the database over here:
https:// www.vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=msg&th=1769& ;start=0&

Still on the lookout for the real box Very Happy

I am not sure it is the same family. That box is brown like al the service boxes.

Nice to see the selingers ad. But this shows Gruen wrist watch in the lid. And suspect to be brown like the service boxes. Mine is clearly stamped wristlet in the lid and outside. And the color is also different. That made me believe it is an earlier box. No prove... I know.

You're right about all those differences Jenneke for sure, about the box and you may be right that it's earlier. I'm simply showing the closest match that I've seen and yes attaching a date to it of 1923. I believe that is the ball park date of your box.

Question. Have you assigned a date to the watch? What year is it from?
I'm assuming you have no reason to believe that it doesn't belong to the box?
I am curious bc it will help me possibly narrow the search for this exact box in the local papers if the watch belongs. Thanks.

This one is from December 1918. Called the "Combination Set".

The earliest I found so far.

So I would say the box is narrowed down from 1918 to 1923. Somewhere over time they switched from the “wristlet” ribbon inside the lid to a printed wristlet text to printed wrist watch text (and brown version). Or a switch to another supplier (or maybe for another market f e canadian).

The watch inside and straps are not original to the box. Embarrassed It is one of my first watches and don’t think I ever tried to identify/date it. Maybe on the old forum. Shall add it to the identify or watch database. Smile

I have checked the years until 1922 and all the years the pictures in the adverts show the printed ribbon style. There is not a single ad showing Jenneke's version, probably because it has not been necessry to make no pictures because of this minor change. So I would say that this version would most likely have been used in the second half of the period, 1920-1922...

Cary, yours seems to be of the first production lot, would it be possible to check the serial number(s) for a dating? Or can you remember since when you have the box? If it were since 1918, this would also be a proof Very Happy

Is it possible J's is even earlier, that the ribbon came later? Asking, since the ribbon is there in all later ads.

Cary's should have the Wadsworth patent (or patent pending) stamp on the metal band, if I'm thinking correctly.

Ah, a brown box. And brown velvet. The color before the black velvet.

It is not the ribbon that made me wonder if it could be earlier. It is the color. Taupe/grey and a finer “bark” structure. Difficult photographing.

Color comparison:
