With discussions of what material some boxes are made of in mind, I was taking a closer look at one of my parts boxes, one that's damaged so I seldom touch it, but I noticed that on the underside there is clearly printed word...like a newspaper?....so I just wanted to say some of the "leatherette" skin on some the parts boxes seem to be made from recycled newspaper!...or something like a page from a book, maybe. Anyways thought it was interesting and funny Laughing

That is interesting. Recycled material. I guess I couldnt control myself to peel it a bit more. Very Happy

I have noticed old newspaper used in cutlery boxes. Maybe this was a common use. Could help dating a box Rolling Eyes

If we all pitch in for a communal X-ray machine we could date our boxes and read some interesting articles.

Gary- like 44 Gruen ad says.. the x ray machine that they dropped from the sky!

Jenneke- no way would I tear the box up. But I did daydream about it, and that there was actually a map underneath to the records, in the landfill.... I'm confident in dating most of my parts boxes so no need to go ballistic. This one is from 1928 to 1929.

They started out originally leather in 1925. And they released certain parts boxes shortly after the calibres were released so jeweler's could repair, here this explains some of it, luckily some of those calibres were in existence just a small window of time.

Aha! So there are true leather ones amid the paper ones. Great find!
