The GS crystal MT360-5 is listed as a fit for the Veri-Thin Moderne, Technician, and Shadow.

We've all seen the Shadow illustration from the Billy Rose Aquacade ad, and the Technician is pictured in an ad with other watches.

Has anyone seen the Moderne?

Do you know what year? Gruen reused many names. So it would depend on what year of "Moderne". For example, Gruens 1946 model has what's described as a "heavy raised crystal". While the 1949 model is very different watch, showing a pitched crystal. Not sure if they are same "Style"
Do you know what year of "Moderne"?

The Moderne I'm thinking of is listed with crystal MT360-5 in the 1943 GS crystal catalog, so 1946 is likely similar.

TipTop's site includes additional style info for MT360-5, "Gruen: 405/377, 405/395, Moderne (Veri-Thin), Shadow (Veri-Thin), Technician (Veri-Thin)"

The 405/377 is shown in the Shadow ad; I'm not familiar with the 405/395.

Ok so you're stating these are Style 405. If the 43 GS catalog is accurate & MT 360 5 fits all three the 39/40 Shadow (tonneau crystal) the 40 Technician (tonneau crystal) and a Moderne model then that means we are looking for a Moderne with a tonneau shaped crystal, Style 405.

The 1946 model and 1949 model are both rectangle. I have no image of a Moderne from 43 or with a barrel shaped crystal. Perhaps someone else does. 🤷‍♀️

46 Moderne.

Thanks, Matthias. The Shadow case back is marked 405-377, the Technician case back 405ss-395. The 395 case appears to be a slightly thicker version of the nearly identical 377 case which accommodates the 405ss. (itm/403783395625). I'm wondering if Strap 375 is the Moderne, a version of Strap 372 with the gold/filled case back.

No worries. And apologies, trying to help but without access catalog, 405 isn't Style then, these must be caliber 405's....Styles numbers do not match. Hm.

Nope. The 1940/41 Veri-Thin Moderne also had a Guildite back. It simply appears to be a Shadow with a metal link band.

Danke schon, Barney. It's not simply the Shadow style case with a metal band. Crucially, this is the only historical depiction I've seen thus far of the Shadow case with a two-tone, sub-seconds dial. If you don't mind me asking, what is the original source of that image?

Dials changed with deliveries, but most often all advertisements were based on the same drawing. Therefore I do not really care about the dials in the advertisements, for me they are just one of several possible ones.

The source of the picture is the Gruen 1941 sales catalog called "Book of designs".
