Hello, and welcome to the forum!

Where did you get this watch? Is it a family heirloom? You might consider posting an introductory thread in the New Member Introductions area, https://vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=thread&frm_ id=2&

The VG forum is focused on Gruen from the time in which it was owned by the Gruen family, through 1959. Earlier Gruen watches are often marked Switzerland; after the sale, the new owners started to mark Gruen with the word 'Swiss.' Your watch looks to be made in Hong Kong, from the 1970's or later, and it's possible you'll find little expertise here on watches from this era.

Best wishes!

This is a watch from near the end of Gruen's long decline, probably late '70s. As the financials got tighter, case manufacturing sources moved from Switzerland/USA to Germany/France and then to Hong Kong. However, the movements were still sourced from Switzerland/Germany and remained high quality. Only at the very last gasp did the movement quality take a dive (see: Gruen caliber 100SS).

Fortunately, the Gruen styling remained good to the end! You have a fine watch there.

I'd say this watch is from 1975 or 1976. Gruen Industries, which was the second iteration of Gruen, ceased operations in 1977.
While I can't positively ID the movement there are things about it that remind me of the autos from A Schild during 70's. I read AS went belly up in late 70's too, bad decade for watches!

I fully agree. About 1975 build date and the movement is most likely an AS5203.

Made in Hongkong, this was one of the el cheapo watches the sinking ship was throwing over board...

What? 19 jewels baby, that's enough for me. Wink

One of the most timeless quotes concerning 100ss comes from Barney: "Caliber 100SS is one of the ugliest movements ever built." Laughing

I like to look at it as a perfect study in Brutalism!
Just the fact its stamped New York is fascinating to me. Another Gruen mystery, maker unknown.

Gruen Caliber 100SS should be the 19 jewel pimped version of the Ebosa caliber 94. I think that the maker is not unknown any more...

I don't really doubt Ebosa as the maker but are you sure 100ss is different version of 94?
Questioning bc sources I am using say the 94 is 9.75 ligne & the 100ss is 12 ligne...

You are correct, my sources also say that Ebosa caliber 94 is 9.75 ligne. But the design looks the same, so the Gruen 100SS is just a scaled up version? Would probably need to measure on of mine if it is really 12 ligne. So, yes, may be caliber 94 is wrong, but it definitely is a close relative and they are the same breed.
